Softball: Vaqueros host Hug Saturday in play-in game

The Fernley High School softball team will host Hug in a play-in game to open the Northern 3A Regional Tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner will advance to play Fallon Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

The Vaqueros swept a three-game series from Elko Wednesday and Thursday to finish the regular season. The first win of that series clinched the third seed for the Vaqueros, earning them a home game for the play-in round. Elko is the No. 3 seed and will play at Sparks on Saturday in the other play-in game, with that winner advancing to play South Tahoe.

The Vaqueros beat Elko 7-0 and 12-2 in Wednesday’s doubleheader, then won a walk-off in Thursday’s finale, 5-4.

Joslyn Wadsworth pitched the shutout in the first game Wednesday, allowing only three hits and one walk, with four strikeouts. The Vaqueros took control of the game with a five-run fifth inning, keyed by a two-run triple by Sara Moffett.

In Wednesday’s second game, doubles by Ximena Rodridriguez and Wadsworth helped the Vaqueros go up 3-2 after Elko got on the board twice in the top of the first. Wadsworth and Hunter Lyle each finished the game with two RBI, while pitcher Janessa Robinson shut the Indians down after their first-inning rally.

In Thursday’s game, Tollestrup scored on a groundout by Moffett in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4, then Tollestrup singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

While the rest of the league was still sorting things out last weekend, the Vaqueros stepped out of league play to compete in a tournament in Susanville, where they won three games and lost two.

The Vaqueros lost their first game last Friday to Chico (Calif.) 11-8. Emma Masters and Hunter Lyle each hit home runs for the Vaqueros, but Chico scored eight runs in the first three innings and held on for the win.

The Vaqueros bounced back later that day to beat Red Bluff (Calif.) 8-3. Pitcher Joslyn Wadsworth held Red Bluff to two hits, and while the Vaqueros only had six hits of their own, they came at clutch times, taking advantage of seven walks by the Red Bluff pitcher. Taylor Tollestrup had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Fernley.

Saturday, the Vaqueros started the day with a 9-1 win over Foothill (Palo Cedro, Calif.). Tollestrup had three hits, including a home run, drove in four runs and scored three times. Masters also scored two runs, while Wadsworth again shut down an opposing lineup, allowing only three hits.

In their second game of the day, the Vaqueros lost 3-2 to University Prep (Redding, Calif.). University Prep scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win. The Vaqueros got both of their runs in the top of the first inning.

In the third game of the day, Tollestrup had another home run and drove in four runs to lead the Vaqueros to an 8-1 win over Shasta (Redding, Calif.).
