Fallon — The fifth annual Fallon Armed Forces Day is slated for May 17 at the Rafter 3C Complex, 255 Sheckler Road.
The annual event’s hours are from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
A free lunch will be provided to U.S. military and veterans as well as to first responders. Armed Forces Day will also feature crafters, vendors, food, live music and more.

Sparks — The public is invited to an Armed Forces Day in Sparks on May 17 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. The event will occur at the American Legion Post building on 730 4th St.
There will be a military tributes exhibit, military vehicles displays, Junior ROTC demonstrations, free kid activities, food and live music, silent auction and raffles.
Celebrate the Army’s 250th birthday
The William C. Westmoreland Chapter of the Association of the United States Army in Northern Nevada is hosting a gala to celebrate the United States Army’s 250th birthday in partnership with various community organizations.
The U.S. Army will celebrate its 250th birthday on June 14, 2025, commemorating the Army's distinguished service to our nation. The central theme for this year’s celebration is “This We’ll Defend.”
Join us as a financial contributor as we embark on a journey to shape our future in honoring our warfighters that embody the values that have been the hallmarks of our Untied State Army culture for the past two-and-a-half centuries. This event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of the Nevada Army National Guard and local private collectors will showcase historic static displays throughout the museum.
Two dynamic speakers are lined up for the gala:
- Maj. Gen. (retied) Mark Mac Carley was commissioned in the USAR in 1983 and retired in 2015 as the deputy chief of staff for the Army's Training and Doctrine Command.
- Brigadier General (BG) D. Roger “Dan” Watters, the adjutant general (TAG) for the Nevada National Guard.

Safe Talk training
Vietnam Veterans of America Sierra Nevada Chapter 989 and VFW Post 9211 are co-sponsoring two separate offerings of “Safe Talk” training at the VFW Bunker, 255 VFW Historic Lane, Reno, in early May.
Safe Talk is an informative Suicide Prevention/Recognition training for those veterans and their families to help them in stemming the rising tide of Veteran Suicide at the 75-plus age group.
Each individual class begins at 1 p.m. on May 6 or on May 7 and will conclude at 4:30 p.m. The classes are free. Contact 702-493-9117 for information.

Veterans Upward Bound at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno can help with academic advisement, college applications, educational benefits, academic review and referrals to community resources.

Patriots to Education
Nevada school districts are preparing to recruit for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. Many districts still have immediate openings for this current school year. Whether you’re looking for a position now or planning ahead, opportunities are available in many roles.
Veterans, National Guard members, reservists, and their spouses usually possess the qualities that schools value in their team members. Senior Companion volunteers
The Senior Companion volunteers ages 55 and older provide basic social support to seniors over the age of 60 years old.
The seniors who receive volunteer services generally live alone, need respite care, have limited access to outside resources, and lack social support. Volunteer services may include taking clients to medical appointments, grocery shopping, running errands, socializing, or engaging in fun activities.
For qualifying volunteers, a small stipend is available for services; transportation reimbursement is provided for all volunteers.

American Legion Post 16 trivia games
The American Legion Post 16 in Fallon announces announce it will keep its trivia game going since it had positive reviews from everyone. Join Post 16 every Wednesday night.
Registration begins at 7 p.m. and game starts at 7:30 p.m.
Fallon's fabulous host Tami will be running our games. You do not have to be a member of the American Legion to attend.
Nevada Guard retiree monthly meetings
- The Nevada Air Guard’s monthly breakfast is on the second Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Reno Elks Club.
- The Nevada Army Guard’s breakfast is on the second Monday of the month at 8 a.m. at the Carson City Elks Club on Nevada Street.
Remember there is no charge from the Elks for the breakfast.
Each meeting normally features a guest speaker. Guests are welcome.
Summer Salute benefits veterans’ groups
This will be the ninth year that the “Summer Salute” will be held (previously hosted by the Classic Chevy Plus Car Club), a benefit car show held on the Saturday, May 24, (Memorial Day weekend) at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.
The entire net proceeds from the show are donated to the Veterans Guest House and Honor Flight Nevada. At the last year the car show, there were over 400 participants with net proceeds of over $28,000.
The Veterans Guest House directly benefits our military service veterans and their family members by providing temporary overnight accommodations when receiving treatment at a medical facility in the Reno-Sparks area. There is a small paid staff which operates the House, along with a good base of volunteers.
Honor Flight Nevada provides transportation and expenses for our northern Nevada veterans to go to Washington DC to see the War Memorials dedicated them. This has been an especially gratifying experience for many World War II Veterans, Korea and Vietnam and is a way of paying tribute to those who gave so much.
