Fernley wrestling: Iron Sharpens Iron

Fernley wrestling: Iron Sharpens Iron

Submitted by coach Jacob McCullar

Expectations for this program are through the roof. We are very talented and have a lot of experience under our belt for both our men’s and women’s roster. The interest and the excitement for the program continue to build every year. This year we have a record 70 wrestlers that decided to come out.

Fernley is returning several state qualifiers and state placers including state champion Nathan Pritchard and state runner-up Riley McCullar. My message from day one has been very clear – our goal this year is a Regional Championship and team state championship, which has not been accomplished at Fernley High School in the last 25 years. We have built a very tough and challenging schedule that will get us ready for the state tournament in February.

Fernley will have four team captains this year. First, Harley Denison, a senior. This is Harley’s second straight year being a team captain. Harley is a two-time state qualifier and will close in on 100 wins for our program this year. Second, Brody Jones, a junior, made his first trip to state last year and finished third. Brody is a great leader and NOBODY out works him in the room. Third, Riley McCullar, a junior has qualified for state every year. Riley is a two-time state qualifier and placer. Riley has racked up over 100 wins for the program in just two years. Last but definitely not least is Sophie Workman. Sophie, a junior, is a two-time state qualifier for the girls and definitely sets the tone for the ladies in the room.
