What could have been a big breakthrough win on the road against one of the Northern 3A powers instead turned into a close loss at Lowry Saturday afternoon for the Fernley High School girls basketball team.
The Vaqueros recovered from a big early deficit, took the game down to the wire, but came up short, 43-38.
“A couple questionable calls at the end of the game didn't go our way,” coach John Rogers said. “They got a lot of free throws in the second half.”
Fernley scored just 2 points in the first quarter and trailed 11-2, but rallied to lead 15-14 at halftime.
“We had to many turnovers early,” Rogers said. “It was a physical game and the girls played their hearts out.”
Rogers said he’s been trying to get the team to understand that if they can play more aggressive and make better screens, they are tough to handle.
“We did that for the most part but just came up short,” Rogers said. “I think another positive going forward is that we are doing a better job rebounding the last two games which has been an issue.”
Grace DeLeon led the Vaqueros with 12 points, Taylor Richardson added 8 and Jaiden Sullivan scored 6.
Next on the schedule for Fernley is a makeup game at Truckee on Thursday and a home game against South Tahoe on Friday in Fernley.

Comment text: Maybe there is more to this story than what is reported, but it seems to me that the businesses that are causing this problem ought to be paying for this, or at least a major portion of it. Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
