Fernley volleyball team hosting North Valleys to open region tournament Monday night

The Fernley High School girls volleyball team will be hosting North Valleys Monday at 6 p.m. to open the in the 3A North Region volleyball tournament.

The Vaqueros tied with Spring Creek for first place in the regular season with a 10-2 record, but are the No. 2 seed for the tournament because of tiebreakers.

The Vaqueros wrapped up the regular season Oct. 24 with a four-set win at Lowry, 25-9, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19.

North Valleys is the the West No. 3 seed.

The first round of the tournament is being played at the home sites of the higher seeded teams on Oct. 28. The first round winners then advance to the semifinals Nov. 1 in Fallon, with the championship game Nov. 2.
Girls soccer finishes 5th in Northern 3A East
The Fernley High School girls soccer team finished their season in fifth place in the Northern 3A East with a record 10-7-1 in league play, and 11-12-1 overall. The Vaqueros finished one game behind Spring Creek for the fourth seed in the regional playoffs.

Kensi Kreller led the Vaqueros in scoring this year with 13 goals and 21 assists, for 47 total points. Sabrina Portillo was the team’s top goal scorer with 14 and also had 3 assists, while Jaelese Wasson had 13 goals and 8 assists. Lilliana Perez was the team’s top goalkeeper with 153 saves and Wasson had 40 saves.
Boys soccer ends season with two wins
The Fernley High School boys soccer team earned shutout wins over Fallon and Lowry in its final two games, but didn’t get the break they needed to earn a playoff spot.

The Vaqueros 1beat Fallon 2-0 on Oct. 18 and Lowry 1-0 on Oct. 19, putting them in fifth place in the Northern 3A, and a chance to get the fourth playoff seed if Lowry beat Fallon. However, Fallon beat Lowry 2-0 on Oct. 22 to claim the fourth playoff seed and eliminate Fernley.

The Vaqueros finished with a 9-6-1 record in league play and 9-10-1 overall.

Jordi Flores led the team with 13 goals and 6 assists for 32 total points, Luis Salazar had 6 goals and 13 assists for 25 points and Joseph Lash added 9 goals and 4 assists for 22 points.
