In-person voting starts Saturday for special election in Fernley Ward 5, Stagecoach GID races

In-person voting starts Saturday for special election in Fernley Ward 5, Stagecoach GID races
Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

In-person voting for the Fernley City Council Ward 5 and Stagecoach GID Board of Trustees will begin with two days of early voting on Saturday and Monday, with election day on Tuesday.

Polls will be open at Fernley City Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A new polling site has been set up at the Old Fire Station and Community Center in Stagecoach, at 8150 U.S. 50. Hours are also 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Monday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Voters may also drop off ballots during the same times at the Lyon County Administration Complex at 27 S. Main St. in Yerington.

The special election was ordered by the Third Judicial District Court after it declared those races void during the primary election because of errors on the ballot.

In each case, an error was printed on the ballot instructing voters to vote for two candidates. In the Fernley Ward 5 race, four candidates are running, but voters should only vote for one candidate. There are four candidates running for the Fernley City Council Ward 5 seat, and the two who receive the most votes advance to the general election in November, unless the winner receives at least one vote more than 50 percent of the total votes.

In the Stagecoach GID race, the primary election ballot likewise instructed voters to vote for two candidates, but it should have been three.

For the special election, the Fernley City Council Ward 5 ballot will say “Vote for One” and the Stagecoach GID Trustees ballot will state “Vote for Three.”
