Both Fernley swimmers who qualified for this year’s 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Las Vegas improved upon their qualifying times from the previous week’s 3A Northern Regional meet.

Zach Schaeffer finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.04, which was .97 seconds faster than his qualifying time. He also placed seventh in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.8, shaving 3.23 seconds from his qualifying time.

Matt Jones came in seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.33, beating his qualifying time by .87 seconds, and he was eighth in the boys 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.98, 1.93 seconds faster than his qualifying time.

The two combined to score nine team points to finish 11th among the 15 teams that had a swimmer competing.
