Fernley swimmers Jones, Schaeffer to compete at state meet

Fernley High School swimmers Matt Jones and Zach Shaeffer will compete in the 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the Pavilion Center Pool in Las Vegas.

Jones and Schaeffer each qualified for the in two events by finishing in the top four in those events in the regional meet last Saturday at the Carson City Aquatic Center.

Schaeffer posted a pair of third place finishes, taking third in the boys 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.03, and third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.01.

Jones finished fourth in both of his individual events, the 200-yard freestyle with a tie of 2:04.91, and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.20.

They two were also part of two relay teams which both came up one place short of qualifying for state. In the 200-yard medley relay, they finished fifth with a time of 2:14.40, and in the 200-yard freestyle relay they were fifth in 1:53.26. Brett Vanderkelen and Donquitas Brittain swam the other two legs in both relays.

The best finish by the girls team was a fifth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, when Brynne Wilcox, Angelina Holt-Sanchez, Megan Coghlan Walker and Rylie Pearson posted a time of 4:38.69. The same group also finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:27.29.

Pearson had a sixth-place finish in the girls 100-yrd backstroke with a time of 1:10.44

As a team, the Fernley girls placed eighth with 65 points and the boys came in fifth with 118 points.
