Led by individual state champion Jacob Holmes, the Fernley High School boys golf team won the 3A state championship Wednesday at the Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump.
The Vaqueros posted a two-day team score of 677 to beat second-place Fallon by three strokes. Holmes shot a two-day total of 155 to finish one stroke better than second-place finisher Troy Kepler of Dayton. Noah Davis finished third individually for the Vaqueros with a two-day score of 162.
Fernley and Fallon were tied for first place at 345 after Tuesday’s first round, while Holmes had the individual lead with a 77. Cooper Glendon of the Meadows had shot 74 in Tuesday’s first round, but was later disqualified.
Holmes followed up with a 78 on Wednesday, with tied with Kepler and Davis for the lowest score of the second round.
Davis shot 84 in Tuesday’s first round and was tied for 10th place, before shooting up the leaderboard with a 78 on Wednesday.
Luke Stanger finished tied 22nd individually for the Vaqueros with a score of 175, and Emory Gertson finished tied for 34th with a score of 190.
