Vaqueros’ softball to open regional tournament vs. Sparks

Vaqueros’ softball to open regional tournament vs. Sparks

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Fernley High School softball team will take on Sparks at 9 a.m. Thursday to open the 3A Northern Regional Tournament in Spring Creek.

The Vaqueros enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed from the East, and advanced into the main bracket of the tournament via a forfeit by Wooster in a play-in game last Saturday.

Under the league’s new playoff format, the No. 3 seed from each division was to host the No. 4 seed from the other division, but Wooster forfeited the game, advancing the Vaqueros into the double-elimination portion of the bracket. The winner of Thursday’s game against Sparks will face Fallo at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, while the loser would play in an elimination game at 9 a.m. Friday.

In the other side of the bracket, Lowry beat South Tahoe 24-4 in the other play-in game on Saturday and will face Elko at 11:15 a.m. for the right to face North Valleys.

The tournament continues Friday with three elimination games and the winner’s bracket semifinal game, with the championship set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The two teams that reach the championship game each qualify for next week’s state tournament being held May 16-18 in Fallon.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
