Firefighters responding to a small brush fire near Fremont St. Thursday afternoon discovered a gas leak.

The fire was caused by arcing power lines near the Union Pacific Rail Line on Fremont St. North Lyon County Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 2:36 p.m. They discovered the gas leak when they arrived, but quickly established a perimeter and isolated the leak. Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Lyon County Emergency Management also responded to the area to notify nearby residents in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter in place order for the area of Fremont and Vine Street, while advising that residents who were in need of shelter or who did not have electricity could go to the Senior Center.

The high winds Thursday also knocked down phone lines, taking 911 offline, and emergency calls were routed to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

The wind also caused heavy damage to the roof of the Fernley Swimming Pool. The pool will be closed until inspection and repairs can be completed and the surrounding park is also closed due to the potential hazard.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
