Fernley wrestlers win Douglas Tournament

The Fernley boys and girls wrestling teams both took first place in the Steve Deaton Varsity Memorial Tournament at Douglas High over the weekend.

The boys team cruised to the win with 365.5 points, well ahead of second-place Douglas with 289.

Team scores in the girls division were not reported.

Shaylee Gavin, Nadera Muhammad, Allison Borden, Camron McMackin, Nathan Pritchard, Riley McCullar and Harley Denison all won individual championships.

Manny Montano, Anthony Robles, KeeShawn Love, Marciano Montano, Sophie Workman, Kiriann Johnson, Sherrah Muhammad and Ruby Reese all finished second in their weight classes, while Isaid Solis, Isaiah Mutte, Tina Garcia, Carlota Sofant all finished in third place.

Last week, the Vaqueros won the Lyon County Championships for the second straight season, beating Yerington 56-24 and Dayton 84-0, then on Wednesday they lost a dual at Lowry, 45-33.

The Vaqueros will be hosting their annual Walter Marrietta Classic this weekend. Wrestling on Friday starts at 2 p.m. and on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
