The Fernley High School girls golf team is competing Tuesday and Wednesday in the 3A State Tournament in Mesquite.

The Vaqueros finished the season as the third qualifying team from the Northern 3A. They finished the regular season by finishing second at South Tahoe and fourth at Truckee, ending up with a total of 32 points in the standings. South Tahoe finished first in the league with 40 points and Wooster was second with 32.

“Excited to take a team to State again,” coach Brian O’Neill said. “It’s been about 10 years.”

Individually, Nadia Velasquez finished third in the league with an average score of 89.2, and will be making her third appearance at the State meet, after qualifying as an individual the last two seasons. The other players on the team will be making their first State appearances.

“The difference this year is the girls have been putting in the extra work and the results have paid off,” O’Neill said.

Madison Rodriguez was Fernley’s No. 2 finisher, placing 14th in the league with an average of 107.6. Gaia Yi averaged 111.8, Ruby Barrett-Reese averaged 119.4, Kaelynn Frisk finished with an average of 119.6 and averaged 140.8.

The 3A State Tournament is being held Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Palms Golf Club just outside Mesquite and Wednesday, Oct. 18 at CasaBlanca Golf Club in Mesquite.
