With a second-place finish last Monday and first overall Tuesday in their home meet, the Fernley High School girls golf team has solidified their likelihood of qualifying for the 3A State Meet later this month.

With two meets remaining, Oct. 9 at South Tahoe and Oct. 10 at Truckee, the Vaqueros are in third place in the Northern 3A standings, 7.5 points ahead of Lowry and eight points in front of Elko. Teams are awarded cup points based on their overall finish as a team. With eight schools fielding full teams last week, the Vaqueros received seven points for finishing second at Lowry and eight points for winning their home meeting.

Before those two meets, Fernley had 15 points, compared to 13.5 for Lowry and 13 for Elko.

“We are in a solid third place position in the state qualifying,” coach Brian O’Neill said.

Individually, Nadia Velasquez finished in third place at Lowry with a score of 90, then Tuesday she finished second with her best score of the season, 85. Velasquez ranks second in the league with a season average of 91, with a narrow edge over Lowry’s Katie Cassinelli, who averages 91.6. The league leader is Rya Montoya of Truckee, who is averaging 78 per round.
