Charges filed against 28 in Silver Springs cockfighting case

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Lyon County District Attorney’s Office has filed felony charges against 28 people as a result of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigation into cockfighting in Silver Springs.

The investigation started when Lyon County Animal Services received an anonymous complaint about a large number of roosters crowing at a home on 10th Street in Silver Springs. Animal Services requested assistance from the Sheriff’s Office, and when deputies arrived, they witnessed hand-to-hand wagering and people holding roosters.

Deputies found 59 dead roosters in and around a garbage can located outside a makeshift fighting ring, which was constructed of hay bales. LCSO says all of the dead roosters had injuries that were consistent with those sustained from bird fighting.

LCAS and LCSO seized 96 live chickens as well as other evidence that indicated it was an organized bird fighting event. Of those, two were severely injured and later died. Three of the birds seized were hens and were re-homed. The 91 remaining fighting roosters were euthanized.

Anyone who has information about the case is asked to contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 577-5206, or remain anonymous by contacting Secret Witness at https://secretwitness.com or by text or phone at (775) 322-4900.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
