Fernley Republican Women to hear presentation on Veterans Guest House

Fernley Republican Women to hear presentation on Veterans Guest House

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Fernley Republican Women will receive a presentation on the Veterans Guest House in Reno at its next meeting, Tuesday May 16 at Fernley High School.

A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for this month’s meeting is Kathi McGathey, operations manager of the Veterans Guest House. The public is always invited to attend. McGathey is rescheduled from March, when she had to cancel due to weather.

McGathey is from Ohio, where she attended college and earned an elementary education degree. After visiting her husband’s family in Reno, they loved the area and decided to relocate here. After taking time off from working, Kathi went to an employment agency looking for a part time or temporary job and met a woman who asked who was interested in running a front desk. Kathi has now been running the front desk at the Veterans’ Guest House for 18 years and is currently the operations manager. She will be giving a history of the guest house and talking about the services provided to veterans and their families.

The FRW’s Caring for America Program collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank and the Armed Forces/Homeland Security Program collects cleaning supplies, food and personal care items, along with donations of funds, for the Veterans Guest House in Reno. The Literacy Committee collects new and lightly used children's books for Bow Wow Books, an organization that teamed up with the Fernley library. Bow Wow Reading Dogs are non-judgmental certified therapy dogs who listen to children reading aloud. All contributions for these important programs will be greatly appreciated. Financial contributions can be sent to the FRW at P. O. Box 412, Fernley, Nevada 89408.
