Sheriff’s Office declares child luring report unfounded

Sheriff’s Office declares child luring report unfounded

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has determined that the report of a man trying to lure a child on April 13 is unfounded.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report at 4:55 p.m. April 13 that a man had tried to lure a pre-teenage girl to his pickup truck. The Sheriff’s Office posted a description of the man and the vehicle and immediately began receiving tips from the community. Less than two hours later, at 6:48 p.m., the man contacted the Sheriff’s Office and proclaimed his innocence. Deputies met with the man, took his statement and deleted the request for information and photo of his truck from social media.

On April 15, the Sheriff’s Office determined the report was unfounded and said the man was determined to have committed no criminal, inappropriate or questionable acts or conduct.

April 14 update Update:

The Sheriff's Office says it has located the driver of the vehicle it was looking for, and determined that the most appropriate course of action was to remove its social media post and request for information. No arrest has been made and no charges have been requested. LCSO says this is an active, ongoing investigation, and thanks the citizens who came forward with information in the case.

Original story

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a person who tried to lure a child into a pickup truck Thursday afternoon.

According to the Sheriff’s Office a man described as a white male, in his late 20s to mid 30s, with dark hair and a mustache, tried to lure a pre-teen girl into his pickup at approximately 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ranch Road and Vance Drive.

The suspect was wearing a blue baseball cap, gray T-shirt and blue pants, and driving a gray/blue Chevrolet quad cab pickup. A photo of the pickup was captured on a nearby surveillance camera.

The girl was riding her bicycle alone when the man tried to lure her into the pickup, but she was able to get away. The suspect was last seen driving east on Vance Drive.

Anyone with information who can assist in identifying the suspect or the vehicle is asked to contact Sgt. Julie Redmond or Sgt. Gabe Santos at (775) 463-6620 or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900 in reference to case number 23LY01601.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
