The orange and black will be well represented this weekend at the 3A State Wrestling championships in Winnemucca.

The Fernley High school wrestling team had nine boys qualify for this week’s tournament, to go along with the five girls who qualified the previous weekend.

The Vaqueros finished fourth in last week’s Northern 3A Region Tournament at north Valleys with 175 team points. Elko won the region championship with 302 points, Lowry was second with 222 and Fallon was third with 178.

The Vaqueros had four wrestlers reach their respective championship matches, and had one region champion, Harley Denison at 175 pounds. He pinned Ayden Rodriguez of Elko in the third round of the championship match.

Camron McMackin (106 pounds), Nathan Pritchard (120) and Nick Glass (215) each finished second.

Riley McCullar (132) and Xavier Phillips (285) each finished third, while Caleb Finley (120), Marciano Montano (157) and Brandon McCullar (165 ) each placed fourth.

They will join Sophie Workman, Shaylee Gavin, Nadera Muhammad, Maria Mendoza-Flores and Ruby Barrett-Reese, who each qualified for State with their performances at the NIAA all Girls Northern Region Tournament on Jan. 28.
