Vaquero wrestlers go 10-1 at Northern 3A Duals

Girls team finishes fourth at Region Tournament

The Fernley High School wrestling team warmed up for this week’s Northern 3A Region Tournament by going 10-1 last Friday and Saturday at the 3A League Duals at Spring Creek.

The Vaqueros defeated Hug (78-6), Lowry (39-37), Fallon (40-36), Truckee (83-0), Sparks (83-0), Spring Creek (48-33), Wooster (65-15), Dayton (78-6), South Tahoe (58-24) and North Valleys (72-9). Their only loss was to Elko (48-29).

The Vaqueros had two wrestlers who went undefeated last weekend and will be No. 1 seeds for this week’s regional tournament at Wooster.

Brandon McCullar went 6-0 plus five forfeits at 165 pounds, while Nick Glass was 5-0 and also had six forfeits at 215 pounds.

Matches begin at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Fernley’s girls team had two regional champions and finished fourth overall last weekend at the NIAA All Girls North Region Tournament Jan. 28 at McQueen. Fernley finished with 91 team points, behind Reed (181) McQueen (99) and Elko (93).

Sophie Workman won the 100-pound championship by pinning Ella Kavanaugh of Douglas and Shaylee Gavin took first place at 107 pinning Bella Coronado of McQueen. Nadera Muhammad finished second at 126, Ruby Barrett-Reese placed fourth at 132 and Shaherrah Muhammad came in sixth at 120.

Workman, Kavanaugh, Gavin and Nadera Muhammad qualify for the Girls State Invitational Feb. 10-11 in Winnemucca.
