The Fernley High School girls basketball team was eliminated from the Gator Winter Classic in Henderson with a 60-50 loss to Las Vegas Thursday morning.
Grace DeLeon led Fernley with 12 points against Las Vegas, while Celeste Condie had 11, Hailee Edgar scored 9 and both Taylor Richardson and Brittney Gaitan added 7 points.
However, coach John Rogers said the Vaqueros played poorly.
“We allowed Las Vegas to drive and make wide open layups the entire game and never adjusted,” he said. “We allowed their shooters to get wide open and they hit a ton of 3s.”
He said the Vaqueros also missed too many shots at the basket and allowed Las Vegas’ pressure to bother them.
“We just buckled today and played intimidated,” Rogers said. “We have corrections to make or the season will get away from us.”
The Vaqueros went 1-3 in the tournament, and now have a week to prepare for the resumption of league play when they host Spring Creek next Friday and Elko on Saturday.
“We came here to play tougher competition and to get ready for league,” Rogers said. “We will see if it did next week when we play Spring Creek and Elko at home.”

Comment text: Could you look into the strong recurring smell around Fernley? It smells like sewage and it can be bad enough that people don’t want to be outside or open their windows.
It would be helpful to get an investigative journalist help the Fernley residents get a clear answer from the City, NDEP, and any involved facilities.
I was really disappointed that the smell was not disclosed by my realtor when I moved here. I enjoy Fernley and am seeing the improvements that are being made.
With Appreciation

Comment text: Maybe there is more to this story than what is reported, but it seems to me that the businesses that are causing this problem ought to be paying for this, or at least a major portion of it. Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
