Fernley wrestlers win Vaquero Invitational

Led by six individual champions, the Fernley High School won the team championship of the 20th annual Walter Murrietta Vaquero Invitational held last Friday and Saturday.

Fernley finished first with 276.5 team points. Fallon was second with 233.5 points and Battle Mountain finished third with 228.

Riley McCullar, Brady Garrett, Marciano Montano, Brandon McCullar, Harley Dennison and Nick Glass each won championships in their weight class, while four other wrestlers placed as well.

Riley McCullar took first place at 132 pounds, pinning Logan Obert of Galena in the championship match.

Brady Garrett won the 138-pound championship, with a pin of Jeramiah Prinz of Fallon.

At 157 pounds, Marciano Montano finished first, pinning Thayne Hatch of Fallon.

In the 165-pound class, Brandon McCullar took first place with a 6-4 decision over Stone Whitlock of Battle Mountain.

At 175, Harley Denison pinned Danny Lee of Eureka to take the championship.

Nick Glass won the 190-pound class with a major decision, 12-4, over Aaron Tekansik of Douglas

Other placers were Camron McMackin second and Shaylee Gavin fifth, both at 106 pounds, Nathan Pritchard second at 120 and Xavier Phillips second at 285.
