Having gotten off to a promising start, the Fernley High School boys basketball teams will host South Tahoe Wednesday night in its home opener.

The Vaqueros are fresh off a tournament in Las Vegas where they split four games, following two wins to open the season, over Mineral County and Hug.

The Vaqueros opened the season beating Mineral County 47-33 and Hug 64-49. In las Vegas, they lost 68-48 to Lake Mead Academy, beat Somerset Sky Pointe 58-37 and Pinecrest Academy Cadence 66-43, the finished with a 42-41 loss to Pyramid Lake.

They have played the first two weeks of the season without Jett Caudle, their leading returning scorer from last season. In his stead, freshman Bryce Stephens is leading the Vaqueros in scoring with 16.2 points per game, with junior Johnnie Williams second at 11.8 points per game. Senior Jake Cumming is leading the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game.

With only two starters back from last season, the Vaqueros have and extremely young roster, with two freshmen.

“We’re playing a lot of guys who lack varsity experience,” coach Cade Knutson said.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
