The Fernley High School wrestling team had six wrestlers reach the finals, leadifng the team to a second place finish at the Mustang Invitational in Lovelock, behind Lowry.

Jared Caulk, Lonnie Slapinski, A,C. Reyes, Willy Pritchard, Cameron Bowman, and Gabe Richards reached the finals, and Slapinski took first place in the 285-pound division.

“Lonnie Slapinski had a great tournament, pinning his opponent in the finals,” coach Scott Gillespie said. “We wrestled well for the most part. Some of the tougher matches revealed some character issues that we need to work on from top to bottom.”

The Vaqueros are scheduled to wrestle Thursday at Battle Mountain, and next week they will compete in the Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Events Center.

“We are a young team and it shows when things get tough,” Gillespie said. “Our goal, as usual, is to get better. Second just doesn't cut it for us.”
