Fernley girls lose heartbreaker at Douglas

Fernley girls lose heartbreaker at Douglas

Hannah Carr scored after rebounding a missed free throw with 11 seconds left to life Douglas to a come-from-behind 44-42 win over Fernley Monday night in Minden.

Douglas rallied from a 40-31 deficit with 3:40 left in the game, as the Vaqueros committed several turnovers in the closing minutes, allowing Douglas to rally.

“We made some poor passes and the turnovers led to points for Douglas,” Fernley coach John Rogers said.

With the game tied at 42, the Vaqueros had the ball with 30 seconds and a chance to regain the lead, but turned the ball over again, leading to the final sequence. Alexa Moss stole the ball for Douglas and was fouled driving to the basket. She missed both free throws, but Carr rebounded the second miss and scored to put Douglas ahead 44-41.

After Carr’s basket, the Vaqueros turned the ball over again. They stole an inbounds pass, but did not get off a good shot before the buzzer.

Brittney Gaitan and Ali Conder both scored in double figures to lead the Vaqueros.

“They had no match for Brittney,” Rogers said. “When we got the ball to her it was almost automatic for her.”

Conder scored the first four points of the game for Fernley and hit some timely jumpers throughout the game.

Fernley led 14-13 at halftime, and the Vaqueros were on the verge of taking control of the game when Taylor Richardson hit a 3-pointer that extended Fernley’s lead to 36-29 with 6:18 remaining. They extended the lead to as much as 40-31 before Douglas used fullcourt and halfcourt zone presses to get back in the game.

Fernley is now 3-5 overall, and plays at Yerington Thursday at 6 p.m.
