Fernley boys golfers tee off in State Tournament Tuesday

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

A year ago, the Fernley High School boys golf team finished first in the Northern 3A in the shortened season due to Covid 19, but were denied a trip to the state meet because there was no postseason.

The year before, they didn’t even get to play.

It’s a long time coming, but finally, the Vaqueros are headed to State.

Fernley finished second in the regular season in the Northern 3A, behind Truckee, and will compete in the 3A State Championship meet Tuesday and Wednesday at Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump.

The Vaqueros finished the regular season with 59 points in the standings, trailing Truckee by 10 points. Fernley averaged a team score of 361.6 for the season, 15.6 strokes higher per round than Truckee. In nine meets this season, the Vaqueros finished second five times and won one meet.

Individually the Vaqueros boasted two of the top four players in the league. Sophomores Jacob Holmes and Noah Davis ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the league. Holmes averaged 82.7 per round, while Davis averaged 85.9. Junior Kade Stanger barely missed ranking in the league’s top 10, finishing 11th with an average 89.5, only .1 behind the Truckee’s Luke Brown, who was 10th.

Freshman Luke Stanger had a 99.3 average, while junior Peter Knodell averaged 107.4 and junior Matt Young averaged 108. Junior Wesley Mull got into three meets and averaged 115.3.
