Baseball: Vaqueros enter Northern 3A Region Tournament as No. 2 seed

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

After rampaging through the second half of the league season with wins in 10 of their last 12 games against Northern 3A East Division opponents, the Fernley High School baseball team enters the Northern 3A Region Tournament starting Thursday in Winnemucca as the No. 2 seed

The Vaqueros finished first in the East Division with a 15-4 record and 22 points in the standings, but South Tahoe went 20-1 in the West Division and had 26 total points in the standings to earn the No. 1 seed.

The Vaqueros will face either No. 3 seed Fallon or No. 6 seed Dayton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Fallon and Dayton play each other at 11:30 a.m. If they win the first game, the Vaqueros would face one of either South Tahoe, Truckee or North Valleys at 2 p.m. Friday. With a loss in the first game, the Vaqueros would have to fight through the losers’ bracket, starting at 9 a.m. Friday.

The Vaqueros finished the season winning five of their last six games in the last two weeks. They swept a three-game series from Spring Creek April 29-30, winning 6-3, 17-2 and 20-10. Last weekend, the Vaqueros lost the Friday game at Elko, 14-4, then swept Saturday’s doubleheader, 11-6 and 5-2.
