Fernley girls win, boys lose in league openers

Fernley girls win, boys lose in league openers
Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

A blocked shot just before the buzzer allowed the Fernley High School girls basketball team to escape with a win in its league opener Tuesday night at South Tahoe, 44-42.

Grace DeLeon and Brittney Gaitan both had 10 points for the Vaqueros.

The game went back and forth, with each team building a lead from 4-8 points, before the other came back.

"The girls played hard and together to hold South Tahoe off and ended up blocking their final attempt just before the buzzer," coach John Rogers said. "Good team effort and gives us confidence going into the weekend."

The win evens Fernley's record at 2-2 overall, and they are 1-0 in the Northern 3A.

The boys team lost its league opener to the Vikings, 72-53. The Vaqueros fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Both teams will play their home openers Saturday against Lowry, with the girls tipping off at 2 p.m., followed by the boys at 3:30 p.m.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
