Boys basketball: Vaqueros win two of first three crossovers

The Fernley High School boys basketball team won two of three games last week in crossover matchups with Northern 3A West Division opponents.

On Dec. 7, the Vaqueros beat Hug 63-45. The game was close through three quarters, with the Vaqueros leading 41-38 until blowing it open by outscoring the Hawks 22-7 in the fourth quarter.

Four players combined for 58 of the Vaqueros’ 63 points, with Jett Caudle and Carson Kingston scoring 15 points each and Ryan Gamsby and Josh Cartagena both scoring 14. Gamsby also pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Vaqueros, while Caudle dished out six assists.

On Dec. 8, the Vaqueros lost 59-58 at South Tahoe, Carson Kingston led the Vaqueros with 20 points, Caudle added 15 and Cartagena scored 14.

They bounced back on Dec. 10 with a 59-44 win at Wooster. Kingston scored 19 points to again lead the Vaqueros, while Cartagena added 17 and Caudle scored 15.

Fernley will play two more crossover games with West Division opponents this week, hosting Wooster Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Sparks Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
