Nate Glass and Kale Kreller won the championships of their individual weight classes, leading six medalists as the Fernley High School wrestling team placed seventh at the Cody Louk Invitational in Wiinnemucca this past weekend.

Glass won the championship at 220 pounds, while Kreller bumped up to 285 pounds and won that weight class.

Other placers for the Vaqueros were Brandon McCullar in second place at 170 pounds, Brody Garrett, fourth at 145 pounds after an injury forfeit in the third-place match, Brady Garrett, sixth at 138 pounds after an injury forfeit in the fifth place match, and Camron McMackin sixth at 106 pounds.

“We are a really young team that is working out the kinks that go along with being young,” coach Ernie Garcia said. “We have gotten much better week after week and will continue to improve as we get everyone back, healthy & at the weight they want to compete at.”

The Vaqueros finished tied with the Spanish Springs Black team for seventh place with 133 points, but they were only seven points out of fourth place. The Spanish Springs Purple team finished first with 262 points. Elko was second with 183.5, Lowry was third with 174 and Damonte Ranch was fourth with 140.

“We were ultimately one or two wins away from fourth and a team trophy,” Garcia said. “The team had a lot of fight this weekend. We’re going to get back to practice Monday and continue to have a better product each week.”

The previous week, Glass, Kreller and Brandon Monteiro each went 5-0 the week before at the Fallon Duals.

This week the Vaqueros are scheduled to wrestle at the Reno Tournament of Champions at the Reno Livestock Events Center Dec. 17-18.
