Fernley volleyball reaches state title match

The Fernley High School volleyball team came back from a two sets to none deficit to beat Moapa Valley 3-2 in a semifinal match of the 3A State Volleyball Tournament Friday night at Hug.

The Vaqueros lost the first two sets 25-23 and 25-15, but after trailing 12-7 in the third set, scored six straight points to take the lead, then steadily pulled away to win 25-17. In the fourth set, after trailing 20-17, the Vaqueros outscored the Pirates 8-1 to force a fifth set, and after taking a 3-2 lead, they never trailed again, winning the fifth set 15-12.

The Vaqueros play Truckee at 2 p.m. Saturday in the championship match. Truckee defeated three-time defending state champion Boulder City 3-1.
