Fernley swimming teams both finish 6th in regional meet

The Fernley High School boys and girls swimming teams each finished sixth at last weekend’s Northern Region Swimming Finals in Carson City.

The girls team scored a total of 65 points. Truckee won the meet with 460 points, while Damonte Ranch was second with 319 points. South Tahoe finished third, Fallon was fourth and Incline came in fifth.

The boys team was sixth with 120 points. Truckee also won the boys championship with 420 points, while Sage Ridge was second with 203. Damonte Ranch finished third, South Tahoe was fourth and Incline was fifth.

The girls team scored their points with sixth place finishes in three different events.

In the girls 200 meter medley relay, the team of Desiree Winship, Allyssa Mathern, Brynne Wilcox and Helen Hill-King finished sixth with a time of 2:40.80. The team of Allysa Mathern, Desiree Winship, Karlyn Mortenson and Maria Mendoza took sixth in the girls 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:24.24. Hill-King also had a sixth place finish individually, with a time of 1L07.53 in the 100 freestyle.

For the boys team, the top finishes were a pair of third-place showings. In the 50 yard freestyle, Caleb Mortenson finished third in 24.39, while Broderick Garrett was fourth in the same event with a time of 24.68. Broderick Garrett came in third in the boys 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.36, and the boys 200 freestyle relay team f Garrett Broderick, Jovan Gonzalez, Braeden Garrett and Caleb Mortenson was third in 1:52.01.

Caleb Mortenson was also fourth in the boys 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.27, while the 200 medley relay team of Braeden Garrett, Caleb Mortenson, Broderick Garrett, Jovan Gonzalez added a sixth place finish in 2:09.16.
