Five file so far to run for city council

Five file so far to run for city council

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The early filing period to run for election is only two days old, and already five candidates have field to run for the three city seats on the city council that are up for election this year.

Incumbents Fran McKay and Albert Torres have filed, as has Shellie Severa, who is scheduled to be sworn into office Wednesday as the replacement for Dan McCassie in Ward 2, after being chosen by the council during a special meeting last Thursday.

In Ward 4, Torres who was appointed to the council last year to replace Sue Seidl, who moved out of town is being challenged so far by Bill Burrows.

McKay is being challenged in Ward 5 by Christopher Ward.

Filing has been slow in the first two days for countywide offices.

Four Lyon County Commission seats are up for election this year.

In District 1, the seat currently held by Bob Hastings, Democrat Leandra Carr and Republican Wes Henderson have filed to run. In District 3, the seat currently held by Ken Gray, Republican Gary Gladwill is the first to file, and in District 5, where Jay Dini was recently appointed to replace the late Greg Hunewill, David Hockaday is the lone candidate to file so far.

Fernley representative Joe Mortensen, the commission vice chairman, is not eligible to run again for his District 4 seat because of term limits.

Lyon County School Board members Sherry Parsons of Fernley and Holly Villines of Yerington have both filed for reelection.

The filing period runs through March 13.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
