Fernley girls top Lowry to extend league lead to 2 games

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

A pair of big runs, one to catch up, and the other to pull away, led the Fernley High School girls basketball team to its 11th straight Northern 3A win Thursday night, as the Vaqueros beat Lowry 71-63

Paired with Tuesday’s 64-34 win at North Valleys, the win over Lowry moved the Vaqueros to 11-0 in league play, 15-2 overall, and gave them a two-game lead in the league standings over Truckee, which is in second place at 9-2, with Lowry third at 8-2.

Against Lowry, the Vaqueros closed the second quarter with a 12-2 run to go into the half with a 36-33 lead. Then after Lowry tied the game heading into the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros outscored the Buckaroos 20-12 in the fourth.

“It was a battle all game,” coach Tom Kingston said. “Lowry has done a really nice job from the last time we played.”

Kingston said the Vaqueros stayed the course by doing the things they’ve done all year, and did an outstanding job from the free throw line to seal the win.

He said Lowry played a stronger man-to-man defense than the first time the teams met, but the Vaqueros countered by keeping the pressure on and switching things up on their own defensive end.

Tuesday, the Vaqueros controlled matters from the outset against North Valley’s leading 20-6 after the first quarter, and outscoring the Panthers in all four quarters,

Celeste Condie led them with 18 points while Karli Burns added 15.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
