Boys basketball: Vaqueros to face Reno Friday in nonleague game

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The holiday break is over for the Fernley High School boys basketball team, which returns from two weeks off to face Reno in a nonleague game at 6 p.m. Friday.

The Vaqueros went into the break off a three-game stretch that included their first league win of the season, 66-42 over North Valleys on Dec. 19.

Sophomore Carson Kingston led the Vaqueros with 30 points, while Anthony Thompson added 12 points and Tucker Hall scored 10.

“We played well defensively with the players really flying around,” coach Derek Miller said.

The next night, the Vaqueros traveled to Spring Creek, but an early 10-point deficit and some costly turnovers proved too much to overcome in a tight game as the Spartans held on to win 55-50.

‘We had our chances to win the game ate and had some costly turnovers,” Miller said. “We made too many mistakes to win.”

Kingston’s 19 points led the Vaqueros, while Thompson, Hall and Drew Miller, in his second game back from an injury, each had 8 points.

In their final game of the week on Dec. 21, the Vaqueros were beaten 73-29 by Elko. The Indians opened the game with a 21-5 first quarter lead and dominated throughout.

“We ran into a buzz saw,” Miller said. “The kids played hard the whole game but we aren’t at Elko’s level right now.”

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
