Volleyball: Vaqueros looking to respond to second league loss

Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

The last time the Fernley volleyball team lost, the Vaqueros went on the road and won three consecutive games. They’re hoping for a similar response beginning this week.

The Vaqueros were beaten in three straight sets last Wednesday by Truckee 25-10, 25-9, 25-21.

The biggest difference in the match came at the net, where The Vaqueros connected on only 12 kills in 72 attacks, compated t 33 in 69 tries by Truckee.

“Truckee is a very good team and we didnt play up to our potential, coach Diane Chapin said. “We made too many mistakes in the first 2 sets to make the score competitive. Finally in the third set we played like we’re capable of and improved in all aspects of the game.”

Willow Jacobson led the Vaqueros with six kills. Natalie Steward had an hand in four blocks, while Katelyn Bunyard had nine digs.

The match completed the first cycle through the Northern 3A schedule for the Vaqueros with a 7-2 league record. Truckee leads the league at 9-0, while South Tahoe is second at 7-1.

The Vaqueros now have seven consecutive games against the teams they’ve beaten in league play, before finishing the regular season with the chance to avenge their two league losses to South Tahoe and Truckee. They will play at Dayton Wednesday at 6 p.m., then host Lowry Thursday at 6 p.m.
