Girls soccer: Vaqueros bounce back from opening loss

Girls soccer: Vaqueros bounce back from opening loss

Jim Vallet, For the Fernley Reporter

After falling to White Pine in its first game, the Fernley girls soccer team evened its record at 1-1 by defeating West Wendover by a score of 8-0 on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Fernley High School.

The game was stopped midway through the second half due to the mercy rule.

Under blue skies and a hot sun, the game was scoreless for the first 10 minutes until Liliana Rodarte intercepted a West Wendover goal kick and quickly deposited the ball in the back of the visitors’ net. Ten minutes after that, Destiny Galvan easily outraced the Wolverine defenders and scored on a breakaway. Less than two minutes later, the spectators were wondering if they were watching a replay as Galvan again flew by the visitor’s defenders and again scored on a breakaway to make the score 3-0.

At this point, coach Tammi Valentine began subbing players freely, but the Vaqueros didn’t let up. Aurora Parsons scored the first of her three consecutive goals, the final two rocket-like shots from over 30 yards out that the West Wendover goalie had no chance to stop. When Parsons was done with her Saturday scoring, Fernley led 6-0.

Evven Johnson beat the now shell-shocked visitor goaltender, and when Emma Parsons outraced the Wolverine defenders and scored on another Fernley breakaway, the game ended.

The Vaqueros will next play this Friday, Sept. 13 against Battle Mountain. Game time is 5 p.m.
