Led by the top team fundraiser Team Hope, and the top individual fundraiser, Frances McKay, the 2019 Relay for Life of Fernley and Rural Nevada raised more than $55,000 toward the fight against cancer.

Fernley and Rural Nevada businesses and community members came together at the Out of Town Park in Fernley on July 13-14 to support the Relay for Life and American Cancer Society’s quest for a World Without Cancer. A total of 239 participants from 26 teams walked the track in support of cancer survivors and caregivers, and in honor of those who did not survive their battle against cancer.

In keeping with this year’s theme, “How the West Cures Cancer,” participants enjoyed western-themed laps around the track, as well as fun western-themed activities and entertainment designed to help Relayers stay awake for the entire 24 hours, symbolizing our round-the-clock battle against cancer.

Thanks to generous support from about 90 local business and countless individual donors, Team Hope was the top fundraiser in the Team category with more than $15,000, while Frances McKay took the individual honors at $5,000. The Teens for a Cure Team had the highest number of participants at 45.

The Fernley Relay for Life committee hopes to increase all of these numbers at next year’s Relay, which will be held in mid-July, 2020.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
