Led by two individual champions, the Fernley High School wrestling team won the championship of the Sparks Invitational last Saturday.

The Vaqueros posted a strong performance in the medal rounds to pull away from Yerington to win the meet with 233.5 team points. Yerington finished second with 195, while Reed was third at 164, Lovelock finished fourth with 143.5 points and Sparks came in fifth with 129. A total of 18 teams scored points.

Brody Garrett won the championship at 106 pounds and Setriano Piroddi won the championship at 220 to lead nine Vaqueros who placed in the tournament.

“Overall I’m happy with how we performed,” coach Ernie Garcia said. “We are starting to get much tougher and fight in every position. Guys are gaining confidence and it’s showing with their ability to put good matches together.”

Angel Guzman (120 pounds), Jared Caulk (145), Jackson Chapin (152) and Carter Chapin (170) all placed second, Kyle Jones (138) finished third, Kale Kreller (182) came in fourth and Morgan Zolyniak (113) placed fifth for the Vaqueros.

“I was pleased with the way Kyle Jones wrestled all weekend. He wrestled really tough and closed the gap on a guy that has beaten him in the past,” Garcia said. “Jackson Chapin and Setriano Piroddi also looked good this weekend. They are starting to find what works for them and are really getting after guys. Brody also put together a really dominant tournament.”

This weekend the Vaqueros will head to Spring Creek to compete in the Kiwanis Invitational.
