Fernley wrestlers win Chester Invitational

With nine individual placers, the Fernley High School wrestling team won the championship of the Chester Invitational in its first meet of the season last weekend.

Angel Guzman at 120 pounds and Setriano Piroddi at 220 each finished second in their individual brackets to lead the Vaqueros. Third place finishers were Brodie Garrett (106 pounds), Corbin Henderson (132), Kyle Jones (138), Jared Caulk (145), Jackson Chapin (152) and Carter Chapin (170), while Sapphire McCormick finished fourth at 126.

It’s unusual for a team to win an invitational without a first place finisher, but coach Ernie Garcia said the Vaqueros were consistent throughout the lineup and he it was a solid overall performance for the first meet.

“The fight was there and most people were taking their shots, which was good,” Garcia said. “We’re only going to get stronger from here with a lot of work.”

This Friday and Saturday the Vaqueros’ varsity residents will compete in the Cody Louk Invitational in Winnemucca, while the JV wrestlers will compete in a tournament Saturday at McQueen.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
