A second-set momentum swing proved too much to overcome for the Fernley High School volleyball team, which lost to Dayton in four sets in the first round of the 3A North Region volleyball tournament in Elko Friday night.

The Vaqueros won the first set 25-21, but Dayton pulled even with a close 25-23 win in the second set, and pulled away to win, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, 17-25.

The loss ended Fernley’s season at 16-10 overall. Dayton went on to lose to Truckee in the semifinals, and Truckee defeated South Tahoe for the region championship. Truckee and South Tahoe will represent the Northern 3A in this week’s state tournament at Bishop Manogue in Reno.

“The girls battled hard and we are proud of their effort,” coach David Trujillo said. “Although we are disappointed in the loss our girls produced another successful season.”
