Volleyball: Vaqueros come up short against Lowry

Volleyball: Vaqueros come up short against Lowry
Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

Twice in three sets Wednesday night, the Fernley High School volleyball team held late leads before Lowry comebacks.

So despite coming up short in all three sets, coach Kiara Stone saw only good after the Vaqueros 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 loss to the Buckaroos,

“I’m so proud of them,” Stone said. “Even though we lost, I saw good things from the beginning. A lot of people stepped up that hadn’t in the past.”

The fired up Vaqueros recovered from a slow start to turn a 9-2 deficit to an 18-12 lead in the first set. But just when it looked like they’d taken control, the Buckaroos turned the momentum and finished the set with a 13-2 run.

Lowry used a similar burst in the second set to turn a 5-5 tie into a 22-7 lead and in the third set, outscored the Vaqueros 11-2 after Fernley led 19-14.

Stone sees the ability to build those leads as a sign of progress for the Vaqueros, who went just 3-17 last season and still have a young roster, with two sophomores in the starting lineup and eight underclassmen on the roster.

“I’ve got a lot of young girls out there,” Stone said. “We made a lot of inexperienced moves. But it looked like we were having fun. Once we get more experience in game time, we’ll be fine.”

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
