Softball: Big week moves Vaqueros atop Northern 3A

Softball: Big week moves Vaqueros atop Northern 3A
Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter

In three games last weekend in Spring Creek, the Fernley High School softball team scored 37 runs.

Monday, the Vaqueros scored more than half of that in one game, and needed almost all of them.

Fernley swept a three-game series from Spring Creek over the weekend, winning 11-0 Friday and 12-1 and 14-0 in a doubleheader Saturday.

Monday, they won a slugfest over Lowry, a makeup of a game postponed in March, 19-16.

Fernley is now 12-1 and in first place in the Northern 3A. Fallon is in second at 9-1, while Lowry fell to 13-2 with Monday’s loss.

McKenna Montgomery was the star of Friday’s first game in Spring Creek. She pitched all five innings, allowing only one hit with no walks and 10 strikeouts, and also hit a home run while going 2-4 at the plate with four runs batted in.

Fernley took the suspense out of the game early, scoring five runs in the first inning, and added four in the third and two in the fifth.

Abigail Abrahamzon handled the pitching in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, allowing one unearned run on five hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Aschlynn Roemer went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the offense, while Katelyn Bunyard was 2-for-3 and drove in two.

Fernley scored three runs in the first, and put the game away with six runs in the fourth, keyed by a two-run single by Roemer, to take a 10-1 lead.

In the finale, Ariana Ruiz tossed a 1-hitter of her own, striking our four with no walks.

With two runs in the first and three in the third, Fernley led 5-0 before exploding for nine runs in the fifth.

Lexi Nelson and Natalie Stewart each drove in three runs, and Colby Johnson drove in two.
