After finishing in a tie for third place in the regular season, the Fernley High School girls will be the No. 4 seed for the Northern 3A League Tournament in Elko.

The Vaqueros finished 11-5 in league play, tied with Spring Creek for third place, but lost out on the third seed due to a tiebreaker.

Fernley will face Elko Thursday at 6:20 p.m. to open the tournament, which is being play at Elko.

The Vaqueros come into the tournament with a three-game winning streak, having finished the regular season last weekend with a 52-14 win at Dayton Feb. 9 and a 49-35 win at Truckee Feb. 10.

“We are excited and anxious to play this weekend,” coach John Rogers said. “The girls are really coming together with what we are trying to accomplish and I feel we are ready to compete.”

Rogers said the Vaqueros have a couple of players banged up with a sore knee and foot, but he is optimistic they will be able to play this weekend.

“We really have a tough draw playing Elko on their home court Thursday but the girls are up for the challenge,” Rogers said.

The winner of Thursday’s game will face Fallon at 6:20 p.m. Friday, with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
