Seven Fernley High School students won a total of 18 awards during the Northern Nevada regional competition for the Scholastic Art Awards 2018.
A total of 2,211 works of art were submitted for the contest, and 684 awards were given. Of those, 76 awards ranging from Honorable Mention to Silver Key to Gold Key were given to 33 students in Lyon County Schools.
Dayton High School art teacher Malaynia Wick had 15 students who won a total of 45 awards.
Dayton Intermediate, Smith Valley and Fernley High Schools also had students who received recognition from the Scholastic Art Awards.
Amy Weishahn and Amerique Powell at Fernley High School had seven students who won 18 awards, including three Gold Keys, five Silver Keys and an American Visions Nominee.
A student from Yerington who submitted as a homeschool student won a Gold Key and is also an American Visions Nominee.

Comment text: Maybe there is more to this story than what is reported, but it seems to me that the businesses that are causing this problem ought to be paying for this, or at least a major portion of it. Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
