After losing their first three games in the Green Valley Gator Winter Classic in Henderson, the Fernley High School girls basketball team built some momentum and confidence by winning their last three.
After losses to Rancho, Fort Pierce (Fla.) Central and San Pedro (Calif) Rolling Hills Prep, the Vaqueros came back with three wins Friday and Saturday.
Friday, the Vaqueros beat Fullerton (Calif.) 47-24.
“We were able to create a lot of turnovers and we got a lot of open looks in our offense,” coach John Rogers said. “It was nice to get a win after a buzzer beater and then going up against two really good teams so we needed to get some confidence back with a win.”
Hailee Edgar had 15 points and Jaiden Sullivan chipped in 10 for the Vaqueros.
Saturday morning, the Vaqueros beat (Las Vegas) Valley, 56-43.
“It took us a while to get going and we weren’t playing well together,” Rogers said. “At halftime we had a regroup session and was able to put together a very nice second half. We allowed their pressure to speed us up and we were not making smart decisions. When we slowed down it was really good.”
Celeste Condie led the Vaqueros with 15 points and Brittney Gaitan added 13.
In their last game of the Tournament Saturday afternoon, the Vaqueros beat Yerington, 44-30.
“It was our third game in less than 24 hours and fourth game in 30 hours. Legs were very tired, beat up, and it showed,” Rogers said. “Yerington had a bunch of players also dealing with injuries from the long week. It was good to finish the weekend on three wins and it was a good and enjoyable trip for the team.”
The Vaqueros led by only two at halftime, but eventually led by 18 before the final.
“We took steps to make ourselves better,” Rogers said.
The Vaqueros, who are 8-6 overall and 3-0 in league play, host Fallon Tuesday at 6 p.m.
