Boys basketball: Vaqueros win consolation bracket in Lake Mead Invitational

The Fernley High School boys basketball team finished its weekend by winning the consolation bracket of the Lake Mead Invitational Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Vaqueros beat The Meadows 67-33 Saturday morning then beat Virgin Valley 54-43 in the consolation final.

Against The Meadows, Fernley opened the game with a 21-2 run and finished it by outscoring the Mustangs 19-6 in the fourth quarter.

Zach Burns led Fernley with 16 points, while Dario Ceresola had 11 and Russ Ortiz added 10.

Against Virgin Valley, the Vaqueros trailed 14-8 heading into the second quarter, but turned the game around by outscoring the Bulldogs 20-8. Virgin Valley rallied in the third to take a 38-37 lead, but Fernley finished with a 17-5 fourth quarter for the win.

Burns led the Vaqueros with 25 points and Rei Robinette added 12.

Burns was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Vaqueros went 3-1 in the tournament and are now 4-1 overall, and will open league play next week, hosting Elko Friday and Spring Creek Saturday.

For a large municipal facility like the indoor-outdoor Fernley Swimming Pool located at 300 Cottonwood Lane, a complete ground-up commercial build or major structural renovation typically spans 6 to 12 months or longer when factoring in large-scale engineering, public municipal permitting, specialized commercial HVAC/roofing, and health department inspections. The current renovation has been- The Fernley Swimming Pool has been closed for approximately six to seven months since late February 2026 for a major roof replacement and facility renovation. Now you sat October. Soooo 8 months for a new roof. The picture shows no other renovations. It smells like sewage and it can be bad enough that people don’t want to be outside or open their windows. It would be helpful to get an investigative journalist help the Fernley residents get a clear answer from the City, NDEP, and any involved facilities.
