Soroptimist International of the Americas, a global women’s organization, recently chartered a new club in Fernley. The organization’s mission is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. The Fernley club was sponsored by its neighboring Fallon club. The two clubs plan to work together on many future projects. Seeing the growth in Northern Nevada is exciting to all of our members.
“I was a recipient of a scholarship from Soroptimist of Carson Valley in 1988. That scholarship helped get me into the career I have today of being the manager of the City of Fernley. I see the value and know this program will change lives here in Fernley,” said Daphne Hooper, the new club President.
The new club, which will serve the community of Fernley, plans to have numerous future projects that will support local women and children. The club also plans to participate in the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award program (formerly called Women’s Opportunity Awards)—which provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The ultimate goal of the program is to help women improve their job prospects in order to become more economically stable.
