Robert Perea, The Fernley Reporter
A special election has been set for two races where errors were printed on the primary election ballot.
The special election will be held July 23 for the Fernley City Council Ward 5 and the Stage General Improvement District Board of Trustees races, with early voting on July 20 and 22. The special election will be only for those two races. All other races on the primary election ballot will proceed as scheduled.
In each case, an error was printed on the ballot instructing voters to vote for two candidates. In the Fernley Ward 5 race, four candidates are running for voters should only vote one candidate. There are four candidates running for the Fernley City Council Ward 5 seat, and the two who receive the most votes advance to the general election in November, unless the winner receives at least one vote more than 50 percent of the total votes.
There are nine candidates running for three seats on the Stagecoach General Improvement District Board of Trustees. Like the Fernley City Council race, the primary election narrows the field for the general election in November.
Because of the errors on the ballot, Lyon County filed an action in Third Judicial District Court on May 31 to void those two races and authorize a special election. Judge John Schlegelmilch issued an order Wednesday voiding the races and ordering the special election in the Stagecoach GID race. However, Nevada Revised Statutes requires the city council to call for the special election, which it did during its meeting Wednesday night.

Comment text: Maybe there is more to this story than what is reported, but it seems to me that the businesses that are causing this problem ought to be paying for this, or at least a major portion of it. Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
