Fernley ACES: Bringing art, culture and community together

By Dana Uhlhorn

This is Dana Uhlhorn from the Fernley ACES, (Art and Culture Event Squad), and I would like to start by thanking Rachel Dahl and Robert Perea for pushing through all the obstacles to produce this paper for Fernley. I know it has been a lot of work, and there have been many pitfalls. This is something that, I believe, Fernley has needed for a long time. Back in my day, (and I’m old!), when you were looking for information about what was going on in the world you would look to one of 3 or 4 TV stations, and your local paper. Man has that changed!!! Now you need to check your emails, follow several different Facebook pages, watch one or two, or more, of hundreds of TV channels, streamers, bloggers, vloggers, and belong to several local organizations, just to know what the heck is going on! This local paper will put an end to all of that, by having the important news for you, the things that are going on locally, the things that will affect you, the information you NEED! Thank you again Rachel and Robert!

Now, as I said, I am the President of the Fernley ACES, (Art and Culture Event Squad), and some of you may not know what that is, so I would like to bring you up to speed. We started about six years ago with a desire to bring some art and some fun events to Fernley. We had a desire to brighten the streets during the Christmas holiday season. We started our little group and did small board projects, and started a Christmas Village, eventually growing to encompass events that we put on all year round. We have Open Mic Nights on a regular basis, we have put on several Comedy nights, Ladies Nights, and we host the scariest Haunted House in the region every year! Our group tries to have something for everyone in town, so we have started doing our Music, Murals, and Margaritas Event in the spring. (You may have seen the results of this around town!). This event brings in children from all of the schools in the area to paint mural panels which are then installed in their schools. We have put on plays, using a strong contingent of student actors, a lot of whom are part of our Haunted House. We continue to grow, and anticipate great things to come for the City of Fernley, which we anticipate being a big part of.

That’s all I have for now, but stay tuned, and I will bring you more information in my column weekly about the goings on of the Fernley ACES, (Art and Culture Event Squad).
