Baseball: Vaqueros try to end tailspin at Fallon

Baseball: Vaqueros try to end tailspin at Fallon

The last time the Fernley High School baseball team won a game was march 28 in Fallon.

The Vaqueros hope a return trip will end their 6-game losing streak.

Since beating Fallon 1-0 on March 28 to finish a 4-0 start in league play, the Vaqueros have lost 6 straight games, getting swept in a 3-game series in Dayton March 31 and April 1, then being swept by Spring Creek last Wednesday and Thursday, in games that were moved up two days because of the storms that were forecast for last weekend.

Spring Creek beat the Vaqueros 11-1 and 13-2 last Wednesday, then pulled out a 10-9 win in the series finale Thursday.

Those losses came on the heels of a 9-5 loss in Dayton March 31 and 7-1 and 14-2 defeats on April 1.

That has the Vaqueros in sixth place in the Northern 3A with a 4-6 record, but as a reminder of how quickly things can change, Dayton now leads the league at 9-3 after entering the doubleheader against Fernley in sixth place.

Fallon enters Tuesday’s game in fifth place at 5-3, as the top seven teams in the league are all within three games in the loss column.

Last Wednesday, Spring Creek rode an 8-run third inning and a 3-hitter by Thomas Anderson to the 11-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader.

In the second game, The Spartans scored 6 runs in the first and seventh innings of their 13-2 win.

In Thursday’s finale, the Vaqueros took a 5-4 lead to the sixth inning, but the Spartans scored six times in the top of the sixth, and the Vaqueros came up a run short with 4 in the bottom half of the inning.

Fernley stats for the three games were not available.
